History
- "Much of what is known has been lost through the ages. He was Dragonborn, yet he served the dragons. A priest in their gild, highly esteemed and very powerful. Then he turned against them, becoming something they feared."
- ―Storn Crag-Strider[src]
During the period of time when dragons ruled over mortals, Miraak served equally a dragon priest on the isle of Solstheim. He came into possession of a Black Volume which in turn led him to servitude nether Hermaeus Mora, the Daedric Prince of Cognition and Fate, who taught him a means to great ability: a dragon shout capable of bending dragons to his will.
With this forbidden cognition in his possession, Miraak turned on his dragon masters, using it, and his ability equally Dragonborn, to devour their souls to become ever more powerful. During the Dragon War, the ancient Nord heroes Hakon One-Heart, Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, and Felldir the Erstwhile had pleaded for Miraak to use his ability as Dragonborn to assistance them in defeating Alduin. However, Miraak refused to do so and instead attempted his ain rebellion against the dragons. Because of his betrayal, the dragons razed his temple on Solstheim.
His rebellion was unsuccessful and he was defeated past another Dragon Priest named Vahlok who was then fabricated his jailor, restraining him to Solstheim.[1] Other accounts mention that just every bit Vahlok was virtually to impale Miraak, Hermaeus Mora saved him by transporting him to the realm of Apocrypha. The dragons and then appointed Vahlok equally ruler of the island, merely not before he was compelled to swear an oath of vigilance to picket for Miraak's return, earning him the title "The Jailor."[2]
Meanwhile, Miraak stayed in the realm of Apocrypha until he could aggregate enough power and influence to return to Solstheim, which he was able to practise in 4E 201.
Personality
Miraak, equally seen in a loading screen.
Miraak can be seen as a very big-headed and rash individual, believing that his Dragonborn heritage sets him to a higher place his former dragon masters. Upon coming together the Terminal Dragonborn, he can merits that, compared to him, they have only killed a "few dragons" and do not yet know the true power of a Dragonborn such as himself (unless the main questline has been completed, in which case Miraak will grudgingly land adoration for the Dragonborn). He also believes himself higher up the servitude of Hermaeus Mora. Miraak is likewise a being that desires power, willing in the by to bind himself in servitude to Hermaeus Mora in social club to proceeds forbidden knowledge and power.
Despite, or perhaps due to, his arrogance, Miraak is shown to exist a very powerful individual, every bit he was not simply able to defy the Dragons he served, but he was also able to devour many of them before his defeat every bit a total of twenty-1 dissimilar Dragon skeletons tin can be found both around and within his temple.
Miraak proves to exist fiercely independent and seems to be motivated solely by his lust for power. This can be seen not only through his initial betrayal of the Dragons at the height of their power, but as well through his resistance to the effects of Apocrypha as it is said that all those who venture in that location become prisoners of their own thirst for noesis and are unable to leave, whereas Miraak appeared unaffected.
During his final boxing with the Dragonborn, he claims that Hakon and the other aboriginal Nord heroes wished to utilise him to slay Alduin, but he chose non to for his own reasons. Yet, should Alduin have already been defeated upon meeting him, he will claim that he could have killed the World-Eater himself, a further sign of his arrogant nature.
Interactions
Dragonborn
Presently after the quest "The Mode of the Vocalisation," two Cultists volition telephone call out and ask the Dragonborn if they are truly Dragonborn. After the conversation they will set on. Subsequently they are killed, a note with orders to impale the "False" Dragonborn in order to please Miraak will exist found on one of their bodies. The quest will and then be directed to the island of Solstheim.
Once on the island, asking effectually Raven Rock volition cause someone to suggest the Temple of Miraak exist investigated. There it will be learned that Miraak has begun taking over the people of Solstheim using the All-Maker Stones.
The Temple of Miraak
Miraak meets the Last Dragonborn.
Miraak himself is met for the kickoff time at the end of this quest. Upon finding the Black Volume: Waking Dreams in the depths of the temple, the Dragonborn volition be transported to Apocrypha, the realm of Hermaeus Mora. Immediately, Miraak will strike the Dragonborn to their knees and claim that they do non know the true power of a Dragonborn. He so says that they tin can await his return like the rest of Tamriel before ordering his seekers to transport the Dragonborn dorsum to Nirn and riding off on a dragon.
Later this, should the Dragonborn kill a dragon when he already possessed a dragon soul, either on Solstheim or in Skyrim, Miraak will briefly appear, taunt the Dragonborn, blot the dragon's soul himself, and so disappear.
At the Summit of Apocrypha
Miraak appears ane last time at the end of this quest to kill the Dragonborn and devour their soul so that he may return to Solstheim. Miraak begins with a short monologue every bit his dragon minions, Relonikiv and Kruziikrel, sit perched upon the nearby arches.
Miraak's demise
During the battle, the dragons circle the summit. Each time Miraak is almost death, he will call down one of the dragons, devouring its soul to replenish his wellness. One time all three dragons have been devoured, he can finally be defeated.
Upon his defeat, Hermaeus Mora appears, impaling him with a tentacle, and expresses his thwarting. And so Miraak disintegrates, leaving simply a skeleton. Hermaeus Mora then transfers his status to the Last Dragonborn. The Dragonborn then absorbs Miraak'southward soul, which yields between v and x dragon souls, plus whatever that Miraak may take stolen. Due to the soul absorption, he will just remain every bit a expressionless skeleton and thus the Dragonborn is never able to see Miraak'south face without unequipping the mask via panel commands.
Miraak's Mantra
This mantra is repeated by people found working on Miraak's shrines surrounding the All-Maker Stones. They will each say ane line when spoken to. In improver, if an All-Maker stone is activated, Miraak'due south disembodied voice will repeat a slightly altered variant of the mantra.
"Here in his shrine ("Here in my shrine)
That they have forgotten (That y'all have forgotten)
Here do we toil (Hither do you toil)
That we might remember (That you might think)
Past night we reclaim (By night y'all reclaim)
What past day was stolen
Far from ourselves (Far from yourselves)
He grows always well-nigh to us (I abound ever well-nigh to you)
Our optics once were blinded (Your eyes one time were blinded)
Now through him do we see (Now through me exercise you lot see)
Our hands once were idle (Your hands once were idle)
Now through them does he speak (Now through them do I speak)
And when the world shall heed
And when the world shall come across
And when the earth remembers
That world shall finish to be."
Combat
Miraak has proven to be an exceptionally powerful individual. Naturally, as a Dragonborn, he is able to utilize several dragon shouts in boxing. The shouts that he is shown to accept cognition of are as follows:
- Fire Jiff
- Frost Jiff
- Bend Will
- Dragon Attribute
- Get Ethereal
- Cyclone
- Whirlwind Dart
- Unrelenting Force
Miraak's shouts seem to lack time limits. However, their usage rate is not as frequent every bit that of Greybeards.
Like well-nigh Dragon Priests throughout Skyrim and Solstheim, Miraak is a very capable mage, able to cast powerful lightning bolts, generate wards, and employ healing spells. He will as well make use of his own personal staff that allows him to summon fields of writhing tentacles that can cause astringent poison damage. He likewise possesses his own personal sword, which allows him to drain his victim's stamina in the form of a behemothic tendril.
During his battle with the Concluding Dragonborn, whenever his health reaches a critical level, Miraak volition utilize the Shouts Become Ethereal and Whirlwind Sprint to become immune to impairment and abscond back to the center of the arena. There, he will telephone call downwards one of the dragons under his control and utilize a unique four-word shout to instantly kill information technology, absorbing their soul and restoring his health. The shout, "..., ziil los dii du!" roughly translates into "..., your soul is mine to devour!" He will likewise sometimes begin the battle by using the Dragon Aspect shout, greatly enhancing his abilities, and will oftentimes utilize Burn down Breath, Frost Jiff, and Whirlwind to attack the Dragonborn in addition to his weapons and magical abilities.
Miraak besides has a few unique abilities that the Dragonborn does not have access to. He is able to use Bend Will to command several dragons at one time and is able to control them from afar. Whenever the Last Dragonborn slays a dragon afterwards meeting Miraak, there is a chance he will appear and absorb the dragon's soul for his own. This unremarkably happens when the Terminal Dragonborn possesses 1 or more dragon souls, indicating his power to blot dragon souls is slightly stronger. This also shows that Miraak, fifty-fifty when not at total power, possessed the ability to temporarily travel between Tamriel and Apocrypha, though in a somewhat incorporeal state. In this state he is as well allowed to all sources of impairment.
